About
I am an epidemiologist and nutrition scientist at the University of Toronto. My research asks how sugars, low- and no-calorie sweeteners and honey affect obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. I lead the methods for our group's systematic reviews and meta-analyses, and this work has informed dietary guidelines from Diabetes Canada, the Canadian Cardiovascular Society and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes.
I also work on artificial intelligence in science. I lead the development of the Toronto 3D AI-assisted evidence-synthesis workflow: a human-gated, auditable system in which AI takes on the laborious steps of a review while researchers verify the sources, the analyses and the certainty ratings. I write and teach about how AI is changing research, writing and learning, and why the scarce skill is shifting from generating results to validating them.
